WHAT EQUIPMENT TO USE AND HOW TO CUT CERAMICS FOR COUNTERTOPS PART 2

How to cut porcelain with hand tools

In this set we find the pencil with a carbide tip, generally tungsten carbide, the ceramic pliers or the carbide scoring wheel pliers. These tools are an excellent option for the do-it-yourselfer who does not expect to do this job many times or to a large extent, as they are very easy to use and fairly inexpensive.

Its operation is very simple: the carbide tips or scoring wheels are used to draw a cutting line on the hard surface of the porcelain tile with the help of a ruler. This line creates a broken zone in the piece, which is forced by means of the pliers. It is necessary to apply a lot of force and firmness with the pliers to force the desired break, but it is recommended in medium or small formats to avoid cracks and loss of material.
How to cut porcelain with manual machines

These are very popular for their precision and ease of cutting in larger formats. Manual ceramic cutters consist of a base and a frame with axles where a carbide scoring wheel slides, which, of course, creates a cutting line with a single and decisive pass. Some allow miter cuts (45°) and are always straight cuts. The break is made with a lever incorporated in the sliding piece.

You can find different models and sizes that allow cutting different materials, but you can find some specifically designed to work with the hardness of porcelain tiles. The cuts are very precise and with little or no loss due to cracking, but the size of the part is limited to the dimensions of the base of the machine, so this must be taken into account before opting for this method.
How to cut porcelain with electric machines

Using electric machines to cut porcelain or cut porcelain tiles is perhaps the method par excellence for construction professionals due to the precision, finishes and versatility in cuts, which allow straight cuts, miter cuts and circular perforations to adapt the pieces to specific architectural elements. But it also requires a much more technical and cautious domain.

The use of these powerful electric machines implies following some basic steps and principles to guarantee professional finishes. You should always think about heating the pieces, so the cut should always be gradual, so that it creates an even cutting line and goes deeper. With the wet cutting method, cuts can be made faster without the need to take breaks to allow the blade to cool.
